CULTURAL OLYMPICS EVENTS WITH ST JOSEPHS SCHOOLS

OLYMPIC TORCH EVENT - SEPTEMBER 2008

Pupils and staff from Cranleigh C of E Primary School, Park Mead Primary School and Peaslake School joined with St Josephs pupils and parents for an afternoon of Olympic-themed activities to celebrate the transfer of the Paralympic flag from Beijing to London with their own torch and flag passing ceremony .  An Olympic track was created around a specially made Olympic torch and pupils were able to run and walk around the track with the flags that they had made from countries all over the world.  The pupils also sang some international songs to celebrate the launch of the Cultural Olympiad that will take place over the next four years.  The event was organised by Ruth Whiddon of St Josephs School and Di Elliot of the Cranfold Confederation of Schools and will be the first of a series of events that local schools will be able to participate in together to celebrate the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.  The children had a fantastic afternoon and really got into the Olympic spirit.  All the pupils were able to participate in the walking and running as well as the songs so it really was both a sporting and cultural event.  Following the torch ceremony, fruit and drinks were served and provided a great opportunity for the pupils to socialise with each other and admire each others flags

PLAYGROUND OLYMPICS EVENT - MARCH 2008

Pupils and staff from St Cuthbert Mayne Catholic Primary School and Park Mead Primary School joined with St Josephs School for their second Cultural Olympics Event of Playground Olympics.  Each team brought their own activity which all the teams took part in around the playground.  There was a choice of slalom races balancing bean bags on the head, throwing games, hurdles, running and ball games to name a few.  Despite the rain on the afternoon, the pupils had a great time taking part and were then able to go into the hall at St Josephs for games with the giant parachute which proved a big hit with the children.  The pupils from St Cuthbert Mayne and Park Mead were very interested in how the staff at St Josephs used sign language with the learners and were keen to learn more, especially how to sign for drinks and biscuits which were served at the end of the afternoon!
